Types and Classification of Internal Combustion Forklifts
Sep 26,2025
By power type:
Diesel forklift: Strong power, not easy to stall at low speeds, strong overload capacity and long-term operation ability, low fuel consumption, but high vibration, noise, large displacement, heavy weight, and high price. Suitable for outdoor operations in industries such as docks and steel, with a carrying capacity of up to 10-52 tons.
Gasoline forklift: small in size, light in weight, high output power, low working noise and vibration, and low in price. But the overload capacity, long-term operation ability are poor, and fuel consumption is high. Suitable for light or short-term operations, with a carrying capacity ranging from 0.5 tons to 4.5 tons.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas Forklift (LPG Forklift): By installing a liquefied petroleum gas conversion device on a gasoline forklift, it is possible to switch between using gasoline and liquefied gas. Good exhaust emissions, significantly less carbon monoxide (CO) emissions than gasoline engines, and low fuel costs (15KG of liquefied gas is equivalent to 20 liters of gasoline). Suitable for indoor operations with high environmental requirements.
By structure type:
Balance weight forklift: The front of the vehicle has forks and a gantry, and the rear of the vehicle is equipped with a balance weight to ensure the stability of outdoor heavy-duty operations. It is the most widely used type of forklift.
Container forklift (front lift): specialized for container loading and unloading, with a maximum carrying capacity of 45 tons, suitable for container yard or port terminal operations.
Side Forklift: Adopting a side mounted fork design, it can be directly forked from the side of the cargo and is suitable for transporting long and narrow goods such as wood and steel pipes.
